Graceful deprecation

Retiring an API without breaking trust
Every API eventually ages out. How a team deprecates says as much about their program maturity as how they build.
A humane deprecation path
- Announce — mark the version deprecated in Exchange / the portal with a clear sunset date.
- Offer the alternative — point consumers to the new version or replacement API.
- Monitor usage — use API Manager analytics to see who is still calling.
- Reach out to remaining consumers before the sunset date.
- Retire — only after usage has drained and consumers have migrated.
What not to do
- Silent removal — the fastest way to break trust across a program.
- A sunset date with no migration path offered.
Coaching note
Deprecation is a relationship exercise. Coach customers to communicate early and often, and to measure before they retire. A well-run sunset builds more credibility with consumers than shipping a new feature.
